Money Matters & Tipping

A little preparation before departure will make managing money abroad much easier.

Here are our recommendations for carrying cash, using cards, and tipping throughout your pilgrimage.

Cash, Cards & ATMs

JMJ Youth recommends traveling with some cash in the local currency of each country you'll be visiting.

When possible, we recommend getting local currency before departure rather than waiting to exchange money after you arrive.

Credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay are also widely accepted in many destinations. ATMs are generally available if you need to withdraw additional cash during your pilgrimage.

Planning to use an ATM?
Make sure your debit card has a 4-digit PIN before you travel.

Tipping Your Guides & Drivers

Tipping customs vary by destination. When tipping, always use the local currency. The suggested amounts below are listed in U.S. dollars for reference; convert them to the local currency of the country you're visiting.

Tips for your JMJ Guide(s) may be given directly to them at the end of their time with your group or at the end of your pilgrimage. If your Guide is U.S.-based, you may tip them in U.S. dollars.

Europe & the Americas

It is customary and appropriate to tip your guides and drivers in Europe and the Americas.

Drivers: $3 USD per person, per transfer and/or day trip
Tips may be given directly to your driver.

JMJ Guides: $4–6 USD per person, per day

Asia

Gratuities are generally not expected in Asia, and in some places tipping can be considered rude.

However, a tip for your JMJ Guide of $4–6 USD per person, per day is always appreciated.

Traveling with Minors

Some destinations and authorities require travelers under the age of 18 to present notarized permission to travel from a parent or legal guardian.

JMJ Youth recommends that every minor bring a notarized permission-to-travel form, even when it is not explicitly required, to avoid potential issues during the pilgrimage.

Traveler Responsibility

It is each traveler's responsibility to obtain the passport, visas, and any other documentation required to travel to or through every country on the final itinerary.

Cancellation due to missing or improper travel documentation is the responsibility of the passenger and is not eligible for a refund.
