About Costa Rica

Picture
The city of Cartago was founded in 1563, was the first successful establishment in Costa Rica, and was the first capital of Costa Rica. Unfortunately the area was severely damaged by earthquakes in 1822, 1841, and 1910, and has had to rebuild several times. Visitors to the city will enjoy a trip to the Central Market and to the Ruins of Santiago Church, not to mention the tropical rainforest nearby.

The Basilica de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles, or Our Lady of the Angels is probably Cartago's most-frequented destination. Here pilgrims can pray before the virgin, affectionately called "La Negrita" by the locals. Pilgrims are invited to participate in the sacraments and visit the site of the miraculous appearance of the statue of Our Lady holding the infant Jesus. Here pilgrims may also drink from the basilica's healing waters.

La Fortuna, also known as La Fortuna de San Carlos, is a small town well-known for it's stunning natural beauty including La Fortuna Waterfall, the hot springs in Rio Chollin, and El Salto, a local watering hole. Visitors will also have the opportunity to experience the rainforest and appreciate its wildlife in a unique way while crossing La Fortuna's hanging bridges.

In Jacó, along Costa Rica's Pacific coast, visit El Miro, the ruins of an old mansion that offers amazing panoramic views of the coast. Explore the beauty of the coastline by ziplining over its rainforests and riding ATVs.

Manuel Antonio National Park in Quepos is known for it beautiful beaches and lush rainforest. Visitors will enjoy a white water rafting adventure through the park and a catamaran boat tour out on the ocean, with a chance of seeing dolphins.

San José, in the central valley of Costa Rica, is its largest city and capital. San José is the home of the National Museum of Costa Rica, its National Theatre, a large metropolitan park, and the international airport. Visitors will enjoy stopping by Plaza de la Cultura and shopping at the Central Market.
