About Brazil

Picture
Sugarloaf Mountain, or Pão de Açucar in Portuguese,  is one of Rio de Janeiro's most iconic landmarks. This peak gets its name from its resemblance to the shape of a traditional sugarloaf, the usual form of refined sugar up until the late 19th century. This mountain overlooks the entrance of Guanabara Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, and the city of Rio de Janeiro. Visitors can enjoy a cable car ride to the very top and enjoy breathtaking views along the way!

The National Sanctuary of Aparecida is and one of South America's most important shrines. The miraculous clay statue now housed in the New Basilica first came to three fishermen who were working in the Paraíba River. They had made several attempts to catch some fish, but were unsuccessful. However, after finding the statue of Our Lady, broken in two pieces, and placing her in their boat, their nets were filled abundantly! Since then, the statue was repaired and has continued to perform many miracles. Our Lady of Aparecida is now the patroness of Brazil. Pilgrims to her sanctuary can participate in the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist, light a candle in the Chapel of Candles, pray in the Basilica, and visit its many chapels.

A Favela is a Portuguese term for a poor neighborhood in Brazil. These neighborhoods are often found on the outer edge of large cities like Rio or São Paulo, and most notably on hillsides. On our pilgrimage we will visit a pacified favela to see and experience first-hand how millions of people live on the hillsides of Brazil.

Petrópolis is a city in the center of the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. The city was founded in 1845 by Bavarian immigrants, and sponsored by Pedro II, the second and last Emperor of Brazil. The emperor held court in this cooler location during the warmer months of the year. Petrópolis was also the state capital for a number of years, and the summer home of many royal and aristocratic families. Visitors to the area can enter these museums and former palaces and learn about the Colonial history of Brazil.

Corcovado, which literally means "hunchback" in Portuguese is another famed Brazilian landmark named for its shape. This mountain is located in the Tijuca Forest, a national park. There are many ways for visitors to reach the mountain, including by train, or by hiking a trail through the rainforest. Corcovado is most well known for being the home of the Christ the Redeemer Statue.

The Sanctuary of Cristo Redentor, or Christ the Redeemer, was built between 1922 -1931 and stands 98 feet high and 92 feet wide. This colossal statue stands at the peak of Corcovado mountain and overlooks the city of Rio, and is one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. At the base of the statue, pilgrims will find The Chapel of Our Lady of Aparecida where mass is held every day at 11 AM, followed by the praying of the Angelus and a multilingual blessing.
