The Amazon + WYD Rio (Can be done Post-WYD as well)
July 18 Depart your city for Manaus July 19 Arrive in Manaus. Check in in to your lodging and take a brief time to get refreshed, before enjoying a walking tour of the city, sharing in Mass at a local church. Soak in the vibrancy and culture of this bustling capital. See historic sites including the 19th century Opera House, Teatro Amazonas, as it gives testimony to the former prosperity of the rubber trade of the region. Enjoy the parks and markets, including the oldest in Brazil, Adolpho Lisboa Market. Take some time for prayer in the Church of St. Sebastien and Cathedral Ingeja Matriz. Ease the jet lag with an early bedtime. July 20 After Breakfast and morning Mass, leave the bustling metropolis of Manaus and head up the river to experience the ecosystem of the Amazon. Check in to your jungle lodge. Enjoy an unforgettable Nature Hike and an evening tour by canoe for alligator and wildlife spotting. July 21 Day tour to the Meeting of the Waters or “ Encontro das Aguas”. One of the most spectacular sights in all of the Amazon, here you will be able to see the natural phenomenon of the confluence of the Rio Negro and mighty Amazon river. This afternoon take an optional canoe ride with an opportunity for Piranha Fishing or visit the home of local Amazonian natives and have the opportunity for fishing. July 22 This morning there is some free time to enjoy natural pools and swimming at the riverbank before Check-out. Return from the jungle to modern civilization and the airport, where you will embark on your journey to marvelous Rio de Janeiro. Upon arrival, you will be met by your WYD guide and transferred to your lodging. Evening orientation to Rio and the WYD events for the week. July 23 Ascend Corcovado to Christ the Redeemer Statue, recently elected as one of the seven modern wonders of the world, which sits 2,300 above sea level (subject to availability). WYD begins this evening with Mass July 24 Morning catechesis, afternoon and evening WYD events July 25 Morning catechesis, welcoming ceremony with our Holy Father July 26 Morning catechesis, afternoon WYD events, Stations of the Cross July 27 Pilgrimage to and participate in the Prayer Vigil with our Holy Father July 28 Morning Mass with our Holy Father, evening free July 29 Depart Rio for home or a post-WYD option *****Daily Mass included if you travel with a priest *****Local Masses when possible if you travel without a priest Because of limited flight capacity, groups will need to be flexible with the return date by two days.
