Sao Paulo + WYD Rio (Can be done Post-WYD as well)
July 19 Depart your city for Sao Paulo July 20 Arrive in Sao Paulo, check into lodging and begin a walking tour. Marvel at the beautiful gothic-style Catedral da Se and visit the Monastery of St. Benedict. Spend time exploring the marvelous interior as well as take time to present your prayers to God. We will then walk to the Edificion BANESPA to get a panoramic view of the city from the top of the building.We will journey back to our lodging to eat dinner together. After dinner, you have free time until evening prayer. (mass will be arranged at one of the churches) July 21 After breakfast, we will share in mass arranged at a local parish. We will then walk to Casa das Rosas, one of the only 20th century mansions left in the district. If open, we will explore the museum and garden. Otherwise, we will continue on to the Parque Trianon, where you will have time to enjoy some recreation, viewing the aviary of birds, all the numerous statues/fountains, etc... We will stop at the local Mercado Municipal so you have time to pick up food for a picnic lunch in the park. The afternoon will take us to visit the Church of St. Francis of Assisi and the Museu do Ipiranga, the oldest museum in the city. Dinner will be served at or near our lodging. Evening prayer together before we head to bed. July 22 After breakfast, we will board the bus and begin our 6 hour drive to Rio de Janeiro. Along the way, we will stop in Aparecida to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida. A statue of Our Lady was found in the river as fishermen were trying to catch fish that weren't around. Once they had the statue and prayed for Our Lady's intercession, their nets became full of fish. Lunch can be found on your own in Aparecida. Our journey will continue to Rio, where we will meet your JMJ Youth guide, check into our lodging, gather our WYD materials and prepare for the coming WYD activities. (mass will be arranged in Sao Paulo before departure or during our stop in Aparecida) July 23 Ascend Corcovado to Christ the Redeemer Statue, recently elected as one of the seven modern wonders of the world, which sits 2,300 above sea level (subject to availability). WYD begins this evening with Mass July 24 Morning catechesis, afternoon and evening WYD events July 25 Morning catechesis, welcoming ceremony with our Holy Father July 26 Morning catechesis, afternoon WYD events, Stations of the Cross July 27 Pilgrimage to and participate in the Prayer Vigil with our Holy Father July 28 Morning Mass with our Holy Father, evening free July 29 Depart Rio for home or a post-WYD option *****Daily Mass included if you travel with a priest *****Local Masses when possible if you travel without a priest Because of limited flight capacity, groups will need to be flexible with the return date by two days.
