Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha was born to an Algonquin and Iroquois family in 1656 in upstate New York. After she survived the smallpax disease, which took the life of her parents and brother, she lived with her aunt and uncle. Although not baptized until she was 20 years old, she often went into the woods to speak to God and pray.

She became the village outcast because she would not renounce her new religion. After fleeing over 200 miles to a Catholic mission near Montreal, she spent the rest of her short life doing penance and serving God's people.

She died in 1680 at the age of 24 years old. Her beatification was in 1980 and her feast day is July 14th.
Blessed Marianne Cope was born in Germany in 1838 and immigrated with her family to the US in 1839. Her calling to the Sisters of St. Francis in Syracuse NY led her to profess her vows at the age of 24 years. Early in her mission, she worked as a teacher but soon after she began working in the hospitals to fill the need.

Her knowledge and talents in the medical field ultimately led her to Hawaii where she and a few other sisters ministered to lepers. She did great work for Maui and lived the last 30 years of her life serving the sick and poor in Hawaii.

She died of natural causes in August 1918 and was beatified in 2005.
